Drinking Beer While Camping - A Match Made In Heaven?

I’ve been on many a camping trip where the camping was really a secondary thought - the beer was really the primary reason to go.

Of course, I’ve had some mornings where I wished I wouldn’t have, so I’m going to give you some first hand advice about the do’s and don’ts of camping and alcohol consumption.

And remember, adults only please (that’s 21 and older in the U.S. - please follow local laws, and use common sense and drink in moderation)

1) Sun + Beer = Dehydration
If you’re sitting in the sun all day drinking beer, you’re going to want to keep in mind that drinking beer is going to dehydrate you, and that’s not good, especially on a hot day. I recommend drinking a glass of water in between each beer to prevent yourself from getting extremely dehydrated which on hot day can be bad news for you

2) Know your limits
This applies everywhere, but there really isn’t anything worse than puking your guts out in a bush next to your campsite. Know if you’re drinking too much or too fast.

3) Campground rules
Usually the biggest concern you’re going to run into is quiet hours, which usually start around 10PM. When a group of people have been drinking heavily, they tend to get loud. And that can disturb other guests.

If you know you’re going to be partying, look for group campgrounds that are further away from other campgrounds or go to a campground where there are no quiet hours.

4) Pickup after yourself
There’s no need to trash your campsite. Throw your trash in a bag and place them in the proper receptacle, and please don’t throw your cans in the fire - they don’t melt completely.

Games to play:

Just about any game on a campground whether it’s cards, horseshoes, or ladder golf can be turned into a drinking game.

However, here is one of my favorites:

1) Polish Horseshoes - This is a game I just recently learned how to play and I love it. Here’s what you’ll need. You’ll need two pvc pipes, two empty bottles of beer, and a frisbee.

Stick the pipes in the ground approximately 30-40 feet apart.

Put the bottles on top of the pipes.

This game is played in teams of two, so you’ll want to have four people total in a game.

Now that your game is setup - make sure everyone has a beer in one hand (kids can use soda, juice, or water).

Start throwing the frisbee back and forth. Your goal is to hit the pipe and knock the bottle off. If the the bottle hit the ground - your team scores three points. However, the other team can catch the bottle and no points are scored.

However, you don’t have to hit the pipe to score (it’s harder than it sounds). If the other team fails to catch the frisbee (make your own determinations if it’s catchable) then you score a point. Since your other hand has a beer in it, you have to catch it with one hand - no two hand catching aloud, and don’t drop that beer, if you do, it’s game over - you lose.

Play to any score you like, but it’s common to play til 21. Make up your own penalties for the losing team.

So go ahead and have a good time next time you’re out camping, just remember not to overdo it and to be respectful of campground rules and your neighbors.
