Best GPS Devices For The Car

Best Automotive GPS Units

I’ll admit that your automotive GPS isn’t going to be highly useful to you once you get to the campground – you’ll want to switch to your handheld GPS at that time – but for finding your camping destination, they can substantially reduce the stress of not only finding your destination, but also make it easy to find the nearest gas station, Chinese restaurant, or rest stop.

Automotive GPS units have come a long way in the last few years. They’re not only cheaper than when I bought my first one in 2005, but they have a whole lot more features.

One of the biggest complaints I have about my GPS is the out of date maps. It doesn’t come up often but when you find yourself trying to find a destination that isn’t in your GPS database, it can be an infuriating experience. New GPS units have maps that rely on user data to supplement their own maps to make sure their maps are always using current roads. Also, some new devices can even adjust your route based on traffic conditions routing your around heavy congestion, road construction, and accidents.

It’s also super easy to tell your GPS where the heck you want to go. Instead of using the touch screen on the unit, just say the address and your GPS will use voice recognition to input the destination.

Some high end devices even play MP3 and integrate with backup cameras.
