While the sales for large RVs and campers have gone down, especially for Class A motorhomes that I talked about in a post earlier in the week, small camper sales are up.

The Toledo Blade says dealers are selling more of the smaller fuel friendly campers such as popups and lightweight travel trailers versus the larger gas guzzling models.

At Coleman Sales and Service in Toledo, Ohio, the 19 foot Travelstar travel trailer by Starcraft and the 10 foot Fleetwood Yuma popup are currently the best selling campers.

I used to complain about my gas mileage going down 1 or 2 miles a gallon when we pulled our popup but now I’m learning to shut my mouth and be happy that we still get 18 miles to the gallon instead of the single digit gas mileage some people have to deal with while on the road with their campers.

But, that doesn’t mean none of the larger RV’s and campers are being sold because they are. And, based on my observations while on the road myself the last 10 days, people with larger Class A motorhomes and 5th wheels are still a plentiful sight on the highways. I saw just as many larger motorhomes while driving on I80 to Nebraska this year as I have seen other years. People are managing to find ways to afford the gas they need to get out and enjoy nature. They might not be taking as many trips as in the past and they may not be traveling as far, but they are getting out there.

Plus, other news articles I’ve seen have said that some larger RV’s are still experiencing strong sales, especially those that are best suited to placement on permanent or long term rental campsites.

It makes sense that some people choose to put a camper on a permanent site in an area they enjoy and then only have to drive themselves and their vehicle to the campground to vacation.
