Stick on States Map Kit

One of my favorite things to do in campgrounds is check out the stick on maps of the United States (like this one) stick on states mapthat many campers and RV’ers have on their campers. I think it’s fun to see how many different places people have traveled to.

I’ve never seen one that was completely filled in but a few weeks ago I saw one that had all the states except Alaska filled in when I was at a rest stop on my way home from visiting my son.

I wandered around by the outdoor vending machines for a few minutes hoping I would see the owners of the motorhome so I could go ask them about their travels (my guess is that they are rv’ing full-time) but after 5 minutes of staring at the snacks and starting to think I needed to buy several of them, I still hadn’t seen the owners of the RV by their rig so I left - still curious (my spouse said I was being nosy but he was curious too - he just wouldn’t admit it!).

I’ve considered buying one of the maps to put on my pop-up camper but I’m pretty sure I’ll lose most of the stickers before my camper ever gets to most of the states. I’ve only camped in two so far - Wisconsin and Nebraska.

My ultimate goal is to be able to retire early and then travel the country in a RV. Then you can be sure I’ll have one of those maps and will relish putting a new sticker on it every time we head into a new state. It will be so much fun!

Vermont Fall Foliage

vermontVermont is one of the prettiest places to be in the fall when the leaves are changing. I had the pleasure of vacationing in Vermont a few years ago for a couple of weeks when the leaves were changing and it was breathtaking.

The fall leaf changing season in Vermont is just around the corner. The leaves typically start changing colors in the northern part of Vermont in mid-September. There’s even a website that posts fall foliage reports so people know when and where to go to get the best “color show.”

The state gets really busy in the fall though. The first two weeks of October are the busiest of the entire year which means it can be hard to find a place to stay without advance reservations - especially on the weekends. But, since Vermont is a fairly small state, a person could stay in northeastern New York, western New Hampshire, or the northwestern part of Massachusetts and be less than an hour’s drive from Vermont and all the fall beauty it has to offer.

If you’re planning a trip there, here’s a few fall vacation planning tips from the Vermont Vacationing website:

- Make advance reservations, particularly for weekend visits.
- The first two weekends of October are the state’s busiest of the whole year so book as far in advance as you can.
- Consider staying in an alternate area because Vermont is small and it only takes an hour to drive from one side of the state to the other.
- Book mid-week because properties that fill up on weekends often have openings during the week.
- If you hate making reservations and like to stay where you end up at the end of that day, stop a little earlier than usual - the Vermont Lodging and Restaurant Association recommends securing reservations by 4 p.m. each day.

While you’re there, don’t forget to check out some of the old covered wooden bridges that are scattered around the state. But, keep in mind you may not be able to drive over them, especially if you have a class A motor home because of the weight restrictions many on many of them.
