The Top Family Campgrounds in America
When planning a camping trip, the most daunting task may be deciding what campground to stay at if it’s somewhere you haven’t been before. I’ve have the misfortune to book a campsite at a campground that sounded good on paper but was a huge disappointment when we got there - so much so that the entire trip was pretty much ruined because the bathrooms with running water were closed for the season and we were camping in a popup camper without any access to a shower. I’m not a complete wimp, but I start to go a little crazy on day 2 without a shower.
To make selecting a campground for your next camping trip easy, Reserve America has compiled their annual list of “Top 100 Family Campgrounds.”
While not every state has a campground on the list, driving to one of these campgrounds is worth it. A combination of public and private campgrounds is on the list, offering something for just about everyone whether you are camping with a family, with a special someone, or taking a solo trip.
For example, Peninsula State Park in Wisconsin made the list. This a is campground I can vouch for since I’ve already stayed there and am staying there again this weekend. It’s a gorgeous park with over 400 campsites in several camping areas, nearly 4,000 acres of parkland to enjoy, and over 7 miles of Lake Michigan shoreline. There’s a sand beach for summer swimming, a boat launch, a fishing pier, a summer theater with professional performances scheduled, many miles of hiking and bike trails, and even a very popular 18 hole golf course. There’s also an 1860’s lighthouse in the park that can be toured. There’s even a public access island that you can take your boat to during the day (no overnight stays allowed). And, if you’re not afraid of heights, there’s a 75 foot tall tower to climb with great views of the water, the nearby islands, and nearby towns, Can you tell I like this campground?
